The Bluecoat garden and café on School Lane is brilliant for this during the day. It is right in town behind Church Street but completely insulated from the noise, and if it is going well you can wander through the galleries or walk five minutes down to the Albert Dock without having to commit to a whole second venue in advance.
A walk down Lark Lane into Sefton Park is hard to beat when the weather is decent. You can grab a coffee from Pippin’s Corner or a pastry from Press Bros, and walking around the lake takes all the awkwardness out of sitting directly opposite someone you have only just met.
